Climate Change Denial
Richard Widick (IICAT:3/5/15)
Are the shocking claims of climate scientists true? Is planetary ecology heading for disaster due to industrial civilization’s overproduction of greenhouse gasses?
On this page we investigate claims to the opposite and the putative campaigns to discredit the climate scientists.
In time this page will reflect our best evaluation of the various claims being made against climate scientists (and climate science in general) by specific individuals, private interests and corporations, especially those originating in the fossil fuel sector, some of which have which have participated in campaigns to intimidate and discredit climate scientists and their work.
Collectively, we refer to these efforts to discredit individual scientists and climate science as Climate Change Denial. Elsewhere (coming soon) we will turn out attention to the social psychology of disavowal—the psychological process in which individuals (and collective entities) manage stress, and thus manage to carry on with business-as-usual in their public and private lives, by acknowledging a phenomena or factual circumstance while at the same time disregarding it or refusing to integrate it and act on it and thus carrying on as if that knowledge is irrelevant.
March 2015: An unfolding scene that may provide some insight into the little known and understood world of the climate denial industry: From the Guardian UK, we have this expose, “Prominent climate change denier took grants from petroleum companies.”
Looking back, we begin with a series of video interviews in which acclaimed US climate scientist Michael E. Mann describes his experience as the target of an organized campaign to discredit his work:
